How to get to Georgia for assisted reproduction? Guide to travel routes and medical preparation in 2026

How to get to Georgia for assisted reproduction? A complete guide to hospital treatment from China.

For families planning to go overseas for assisted reproductive treatment, determining the destination is only the beginning. Where to start in China, which city the plane landed in, what entry procedures need to be handled, and when to arrive at the hospital, these issues directly affect whether the follow-up treatment can be smoothly connected.

At present, China has direct flights to Georgia, and the visa-free policy between the two countries makes short-term travel relatively convenient. However, the medical itinerary is different from ordinary travel, and the departure time cannot be determined simply according to the ticket price.

1. Where should I fly to Georgia for assisted reproduction?

If the reserved reproductive hospital is located in Tbilisi, the capital, Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) can usually be used as the destination.

Georgia also has international airports in Kutaisi, Batumi and other cities, but for those who plan to receive treatment in Tbilisi, choosing other cities to enter the country may increase ground transportation and accommodation arrangements.

Starting from China, we can focus on two kinds of routes at present.

Direct flights from Shanghai to Tbilisi:

On July 15th, 2026, China Eastern Airlines officially opened a direct flight route from Shanghai Pudong to Tbilisi with flight number MU285. The announced initial schedule is every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and the planned flight time is about 10 hours and 10 minutes.

For passengers in East China, the actual travel costs of Shanghai direct flights and other transit routes can be compared first.

Urumqi flies directly to Tbilisi:

Urumqi is also an important aviation starting point for China to fly to Georgia, and there are direct flights to Tbilisi.

Passengers from Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and other cities can compare the connecting flights via Urumqi, connecting flights via Shanghai and other international transit schemes.

When choosing a flight, in addition to the price, we should also pay attention to whether the checked baggage can be hung directly, whether it is necessary to check in again, and whether the transfer in a third country involves additional entry procedures. The specific frequency is subject to the information published by the airline at the time of ticket purchase.

Second, get the appointment date of the hospital before determining the air ticket.

Assisted reproductive therapy usually needs to combine the results of physical examination with the arrangement of women's menstrual cycle, and the first time for different patients to arrive at the hospital is different.

For example, people who have completed the preliminary examination and only need further face-to-face consultation may have different suitable departure dates from those who need to complete ovulation induction treatment locally.

Therefore, it is suggested to confirm the admission time, required examination and estimated stay arrangement through the official channels of the hospital before choosing the flight according to the medical plan.

In the case of multiple trips, it should also be confirmed which rechecks can be completed in China to avoid going abroad repeatedly because of a common inspection.

3. Do I need a visa to go to Georgia in 2026?

According to the visa-free agreement between China and China, which came into effect on May 28th, 2024, citizens of can enter Georgia visa-free if they hold valid ordinary passports.

The single visa-free stay period shall not exceed 30 days, and the cumulative stay every 180 days shall not exceed 90 days.

If you plan to stay for more than 30 days, or involve other activities that require prior approval, you should check the corresponding visa requirements with the relevant Georgian authorities or the embassy in China in advance.

There is also an easily overlooked provision: since January 1, 2026, Georgia has implemented travel medical and accident insurance requirements for inbound tourists, with the insured amount not less than 30,000 Georgian lari, the insurance should cover the whole stay period, and insurance documents should be prepared in English or Georgian.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that the general travel insurance does not necessarily cover the planned assisted reproductive treatment and its complications, and the insurance liability and exemption clauses should be read separately.

4. What materials should be prepared before departure?

Cross-border medical information can be divided into two parts.

The first part is entry and exit information, including valid passport, air ticket and travel itinerary, accommodation information, insurance documents that meet the requirements, and information used to explain the purpose of travel and the ability to pay expenses when necessary.

The second part is medical data, including recent examination results, previous diagnosis records, treatment plans, surgical data and medication records.

If you have received test-tube treatment in other hospitals in the past, you can also sort out the records of embryo culture, transplantation and follow-up so that local doctors can understand the past situation.

For arrangements involving third-party assisted reproduction, it is also necessary to verify the applicable conditions of local laws, proof of identity relationship and relevant documents in advance. Ordinary IVF treatment and medical arrangements involving third parties cannot be regarded as the same set of application procedures.

5. How to make more reasonable arrangements after arriving in Tbilisi?

It is suggested that the day of arrival should be mainly used for entry, transportation, check-in and rest, and it is not appropriate to arrange a large number of inspections immediately after a long flight.

When booking accommodation, you can give priority to hotels or apartments with convenient transportation around the hospital and flexible adjustment of check-in date, rather than simply choosing the lowest-priced housing.

When you arrive at the hospital for the first time, you should check the appointment information and confirm the next examination, medication and follow-up arrangements with the doctor.

When it comes to important medical decisions, it is recommended to use translation services that can accurately communicate professional terms and avoid understanding treatment plans only by daily oral English.

6. When is the right time to buy a return ticket?

To go to Georgia for assisted reproductive treatment, the return date needs to match the specific medical operation.

For example, the recovery after egg retrieval, whether further observation is needed and whether follow-up transplantation is arranged will all affect the doctor's suggestion on the departure time.

Some patients may go back to China to wait for follow-up arrangements after completing a visit, while others need to continue treatment locally.

Therefore, it is usually more flexible to choose a changeable ticket than to set a non-adjustable return date in advance. Cases involving the safety of long-distance flights should follow the doctor's judgment based on personal physical condition.

How to get to Georgia's assisted reproduction is a traffic problem on the surface. In fact, it is necessary to coordinate international routes, entry regulations, hospital appointments and medical time at the same time.

For families visiting Georgia for the first time, they can check flights, prepare travel documents, and implement accommodation and return plans after the hospital confirms the treatment arrangements.

Making these preparations in advance can't guarantee the treatment results, but it will help to reduce the extra rush caused by incomplete information in the process of cross-border medical treatment and make the whole travel process more orderly.
